How is Mad Owl Special Edition Gin made?

Mad Owl Gin's botanicals.jpg

Mad Owl Special Edition Gin is distilled by the Thornæs Distillery, which is named after the distillery’s founder Torben Thornæs. It is made using botanicals like fresh oranges, lemons and lemon verbena grown just down the road from the distillery. They are all distilled with base alcohol, giving the gin its remarkable citrus-forward flavour profile.

The botanicals used to make Mad Owl Special Edition Gin: juniper, coriander, angelica root, grains of paradise, orange zest, lemon zest, lemon verbena and orris root.

But why is it call “Mad Owl Gin”? Mad Owl Gin is named after an owl that was discovered in the attic of the building that would become Thornæs Distillery when Torben Thornæs first discovered the property.

It [the owl] was visible and then invisible all the way down [the attic], and it finished up at the dark side of the room. It was just a magical moment. First I got a shock. I thought, ‘What was that!?’ Because it didn’t make a noise. It was just floating all the way down.

— Torben Thornæs

Torben and his team gave their avian flatmate a moniker: the Mad Owl. And when they launched their first gin – the noisy production of which had driven their owl to a disused building across the yard – they could think of no better namesake.

What does Mad Owl Special Edition Gin taste like?

Mad Owl Special Edition Gin has clear citrus tones on the nose from the lemon, orange and lemon verbena. On the palate, a smack of juniper meets a light, crisp bitterness and slight sweetness alongside zesty citrus. They all last long into the bright and delightful finish.
