Angostura Orange Bitters, which we sent to our members in their October 2020 Gin of the Month box, are the perfect way to add a touch of beautifully deep, spiced, citrus flavour to your favourite gin drinks.

They are often the unsung hero of many a classic cocktail, including the Old Fashioned and the Revolver (both traditional whisky-based cocktails). But with their amazing orange flavour and uncanny ability to add instant complexity to your tipple, the possibilities for experimentation with gin are endless - a dash here and there is all you need.

The cocktails below are just two examples of how Angostura Orange Bitters can be used to take your gin cocktails to the next level!

Classic Dry Martini

The rich juniper tones of the gin and herbaceous aromas of the vermouth are elevated by a zesty touch of citrus and spice from the delicious bitters in this smooth, clean and delectably dry cocktail.

Stir your ingredients with ice in a shaker or mixing glass then strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish and serve.

Negroni

The deep citrus and spice flavours of Angostura Orange Bitters are the perfect complements to the bitter citrus of the Campari and the sweet delights of the vermouth in this wonderful cocktail. All are the perfect match for gin’s juniper-forward complexity.

So What Are Orange Bitters?

Orange Bitters are a flavouring agent made with fruits, spices or herbs infused in a base spirit. They pack a seriously bold flavour punch, so use them sparingly! Just a drop or two is enough to add instant depth and flavour to your cocktails.

The amazing Angostura Orange Bitters in our October 2020 Gin of the Month box is made by steeping a complex blend of tropical, sun-ripened Caribbean oranges with an array of unique local Trinidadian herbs and spices in a base spirit. They’re the first bitters that Angostura has launched since its iconic original Angostura Bitters came to the market way back in 1824.

These bitters don’t share any ingredients with that first foray into cocktail history, but they do share the superior quality that has made Angostura a mainstay on bar carts across the world.

What’s more, Angostura Orange Bitters are also an amazing addition to food recipes. Just a drop or two is a convenient substitution for any recipe calling for orange zest.

These bitters are particularly delicious in savoury sauces like barbecue sauces and remoulades, alongside shrimp and shellfish and in soups and gravies.

One of our favourite ways to enjoy Angostura Orange Bitters in food is in this deliciously autumnal pumpkin pie recipe, you need to give it a try!
