In this feature, we’re going to take you through three of the best rum and Angostura bitters cocktails that you can make at home.

From a rum-based Espresso Martini-like Grog to an elegantly named Queen’s Park Swizzle, each one of these classic cocktail recipes combines rum with a different flavour of Angostura bitters and the effects are sublime. The only problem you’ll have is deciding which one is your favourite!

What do bitters like Angostura do to a cocktail?

The primary use for bitters in a cocktail is to balance out the other flavours. Cocktails often consist of sweet and sour ingredients, and adding the bitters can balance out those contrasting tones wonderfully.

Mixologists also often use bitters to garnish cocktails. Their unique, dark colour is fantastic for creating patterns on the top of the foam of a sour cocktail, for example.

Angostura bitters can also add new and exciting flavour tones to the cocktail. Angostura aromatic bitters are great for when you want that classic spiced bitters flavour, their orange bitters add warm citrus tones to your cocktail and their cocoa bitters can add wonderfully chocolatey flavours to a cocktail.

All three flavours work great in gin cocktails like the ones that can be found here. But for this feature, we are sticking with rum cocktails. The characteristic caramel-like tones of rum are a beautiful match for the spiced profile of the bitters.

Give these three fabulous cocktails a go today!
