Summer is here, and that can only mean one thing… it’s spritz season! We’re just a little bit excited for the longer days and sun on our skin at Craft Gin Club

The Hugo Spritz cocktail is hugely popular, and it’s a top summer sip - thanks to its light, refreshing and floral flavours.

You might have seen this popular cocktail everywhere recently - served at every bar, all over social media, in magazines, and more. It’s actually had a bit of a renaissance - with TikTok calling it *the* cocktail of summer 2023.

On-trend and mouthwatering, the Hugo Spritz has it all…

It’s so tasty, we know it’s a recipe you’ll be revisiting time and time again. If you love a gin and elderflower cocktail, we’ve plenty more where that came from.

Want to get to know the Hugo Spritz better? Here’s everything you need to know…

What is a Hugo Spritz made of?
The Hugo Spritz cocktail combines prosecco, elderflower liqueur, seltzer, lime, and mint. Its an ideal aperitivo, thanks to its delicate flavour.

What is the difference between an Aperol and Hugo Spritz?
The main difference between these two popular tipples is the key ingredient. If you swap the Aperol in an Aperol Spritz to an elderflower liqueur (and swap the garnish for fresh mint) it’s got very similar ingredients.

The Hugo Spritz is more floral, whereas an Aperol Spritz is more tart and bitter. It’s all down to your personal taste preference.

Why is it called a Hugo Spritz?
Created in Italy in 2005 as an alternative to the Aperol Spritz, mixologist Roland Gruber originally named it the Otto Spritz (which used lemon balm syrup instead of elderflower).

He later evolved the cocktail to use elderflower liqueur and changed the name to Hugo.

What does the Hugo Spritz taste like?

The Hugo Spitz is sweet and floral and brimming with elderflower tones from the elderflower syrup. The prosecco adds crisp white wine notes and the soda water creates a clean, refreshing canvas for the other flavours to shine from.

The gin then gives the cocktail a rich base of earthy juniper and the garnishes add minty green herb flavours and a hint of fragrant citrus - it’s delicious!

How to make a Hugo Elderflower Spritz:

20ml gin
20ml elderflower cordial
25ml soda water
125ml Prosecco
Lime twist and mint, to garnish

Add the fresh mint first to your chosen glass, then add in the gin, elderflower cordial and soda water. Top with prosecco and add your lime twist and mint to garnish. Enjoy!
