This fun twist on the classic Blue Hawaiian swaps the rum for a special craft gin to give you a stunning new taste of the tropics.

Made with Salcombe Gin 'Start Point' - The Azores Edition, blue curaçao, coconut, and pineapple juice, it's bursting with tropical flavours that are perfect for sipping in the sun - especially if you're on the beach!

What alcohol is in a Blue Hawaiian?

Traditionally, the Blue Hawaiian is made with white rum.

For this alternative version of the cocktail, we have gone with Salcombe Gin 'Start Point' - The Azores Edition, Craft Gin Club's May 2024 Gin of the Month from Salcombe Distilling Co. in Salcombe, Devon.

This delicious gin was inspired by the historic trade route for fruit and spices between St Michael's in the Azores and Salcombe. Its fabulous mix of citrus, floral and herb flavours make it the perfect complement to the sweet orange tones of blue curaçao and the tropical fruit flavours of pineapple juice and coconut.

The traditional Blue Hawaiian calls for coconut cream, but if you prefer a lighter cocktail, feel free to swap in fresh coconut milk. Both deliver that gloriously fragrant coconut flavour.

What does Blue Hawaiian taste like?

The Blue Hawaiian is a tropical cocktail that's full of tropical fruit flavours.

The alcohol gives the cocktail a rich base from which sweet-tart and vibrant pineapple flavours leap across the palate joined by wonderfully mellow coconut tones.

The blue curaçao then adds a layering of sweet orange citrus flavours that round out each sip.

It's perfect for anyone who loves a sweet, fruity, tropical cocktail recipe.

Is the Blue Hawaiian strong?

Whether you make your Blue Hawaiian with rum or gin, the cocktail is strong as gin has at least 37.5% ABV and rum usually sits around 40% ABV.

As such, the cocktail should be drunk responsibly.

What is the difference between Blue Hawaii and Blue Hawaiian?

Blue Hawaiian and Blue Hawaii may have incredibly similar names but they are two separate cocktails.

The main difference is that the Blue Hawaiian is made with coconut cream or milk and the Blue Hawaii is made with "sweet and sour mix", which is a combination of sour citrus juice and simple syrup.

Blue Hawaiian vs Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon is another blue tropical cocktail that is very similar to the Blue Hawaiian.

The difference between these two cocktails is that Blue Hawaiian is traditionally made with rum whereas the Blue Lagoon is traditionally made with vodka.

You can find Craft Gin Club's Blue Lagoon recipe at this link.
