Cocktail of the Week: Hot Gin Punch

Hot Gin Punch

This hot punch, inspired by Bob Cratchit’s concoction in Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and flavoured with cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg, is like Christmas in a glass.

(Makes approximately 6 servings)


480ml gin
480ml sweet Madeira wine
1 tablespoon dark brown sugar (or more if you prefer)
Peel and juice of 1 lemon (or more if you prefer)
Peel and juice of 1 orange
1 pineapple, peeled, cored, and sliced
3 whole cloves
3 cinnamon sticks
Pinch of ground nutmeg


  1. Put all the ingredients in a medium-sized pan over a medium heat.
  2. Bring to a simmer and cook for 30 minutes
  3. Taste and adjust the balance of flavours with more brown sugar or more lemon juice as you prefer.
  4. Pour the mixture into a jug, punch bowl or even a teapot and serve warm.
