A rare bottle of Scotch whisky dating back to 1926 has broken records at auction, selling for a jaw-dropping £1.5 million (US$1.9 million).

The Macallan 1926 is a 60-year-old single malt and experts at prestigious London auction house Sotheby’s, where the auction was held, had estimated it would sell for between £350,000 and £450,000, according to the BBC.

However, the cask - which was one of only 40 distilled in 1926 before being bottle in 1986, and was described by Sotheby’s as the "holy grail" of whisky - went on to sell for almost four times that amount. The identity of the buyer has not been revealed.

The record-breaking purchase was part of the "ultimate whisky collection", a collection of 467 rare and highly exclusive tipples. The final amount raised across the sale of the collection was a staggering £7,635,619 - about double the pre-auction estimate.

We got to thinking: is this an unusual price for a single bottle of booze?

What other hefty price tags are there out there in the world - what are some of the most expensive drinks on the planet?

Morus LXVI gin.jpg

A gift box of a 70cl and 3cl handmade jar of MORUS LXIV gin will set you back a breathtaking £4000.

Available exclusively at Harvey Nichols in London, the gin is made with leaves which are harvested by hand from a single ancient Mulberry Tree, then individually hung and air-dried slowly in small batches.

According to its producers, it has a “smokey, long and deceptively smooth” flavour.

A limited-edition decanter of Gosling’s Auld Trophy Rum will set you back $10,000 (£7790).

Only 166 decanters of the rum were produced, to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the America’s Cup sailing race in 2017 in Bermuda, which is home to Goslings distillery.

Your money will get you a handmade wooden chest containing a 75cl bottle of rum and a handmade decanter made from Dartington Crystal, designed to resemble a smaller version of the America’s Cup trophy, the “Auld Mug”.

You’ll also get a solid glass stopper for the decanter, a leather book describing the production process and a tasting journal to where you can record your impressions and notes from your sipping sessions.

To buy the most expensive bottle of Champagne in the world, the 2013 Taste of Diamonds, you’ll need a cool £1.6 million (US$2.07 million)

The Champagne, a blend of Grand Cru Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, has a “floral, refreshing and creamy” texture and ends with a light and elegant finish, according to the producers.

The bottle itself has a lot to do with the price tag: its logo is handcrafted from 18-carat gold and at its centre sits a single white diamond weighing 19 carats.

Just 20 bottles of Legacy Rum were released in 2012 by Angostura, only two of which were put on sale at Harrod’s the following year - with an eye-watering price tag of £20,000 each!

The rum was created to mark the 50th year of independence for Trinidad and Tobago, and came in a 500ml decanter designed by Asprey of London, complete with a bespoke stopper that reportedly took 10 master craftsmen 560 hours to complete.

Made up of a special blend of seven of the brand’s most rare and precious rums, Legacy by Angostura was designed to be “the greatest sipping rum ever produced”, and offers a taste that is “both unique and unequalled,” according to Angostura’s Master Distiller.

A bottle of Ley Diamante tequila by Tequila Ley costs US$3.5 million!

The bottle is made from two kilos of platinum and is encrusted with 4,100 white diamonds, making it the most expensive bottle of tequila in the world and the most important jewel made in Mexico since colonial times (1521-1810), according to its makers.
