Gin Reed Diffuser

Make aromatherapy part of your everyday life with this guide to making your own gin-soaked, juniper-scented incense diffuser, made from your very own upcycled gin bottle!

Now that we’ll be hunkering down, it’s the perfect excuse for some ginny DIY…

This activity is a great outlet for your creative side, from selecting the empty gin bottle you want to transform to decorating your bottle.

The essential oils that you pick to create your scents can all play a unique role in subtly altering the feel and fragrance of a room…

Lavender is relaxing, for example, and eucalyptus is uplifting. So it’s up to you to play around with your scents and decide what you want you want to achieve for each room in your home.

Not only that, but you can also try to match up your scents to the gin you use to water down your oils with. We love getting crafty and creative to make these diffusers and we think you will too!

Oh, and if you do end up making one of your own, please do share your pics of your creation with us on Facebook and tag us (and your friends) to show it off!

How to upcycle your gin bottle into a reed diffuser

A miniature gin bottle would also work for this upcycling project!

You will need:

  • 1 empty bottle with a small opening (a gin bottle will do, your membership to Craft Gin Club has you covered there!)
  • 3 - 5 diffuser reeds (can be found at Waitrose)
  • 350ml mineral oil (you can get this from Amazon)
  • 30 - 50 drops of essential oils, any flavour or mix of flavours that you like (we like Neal’s Yard’s range but Holland and Barrett is also a great place to look)
  • 3tbsp gin (stronger gins are better for this, a navy strength gin would be great!)
  • 1 measuring jug with pouring spout (available at any kitchen shop or Amazon if you don’t have one)

Now you can start making your diffuser!

  • Pour your mineral oil into your measuring jug, followed by your gin. Stir them together until well incorporated.
  • Then add your drops of essential oils. Between 30 - 50 drops should do the trick, depending on how strong you would like the fragrance from the diffuser to be. Stir the essential oils into the solution.
  • Pour the mix into your bottle and add the diffuser reeds.
  • After at least 3 hours turn the reeds upside down so the dry end is now in the solution. Then repeat that every couple of days to keep your room smelling fragrant.
