The Inn was rebuilt in 1420, after the French raiders destroyed Rye in 1377 – but the vaulted cellars date back to 1156. The inn is also have said to be the base for a notorious group of smugglers, the Hawkhurst Gang, who controlled the smuggling of tea, coffee, brandy and wool from Dover to Poole in Dorset.

Based on the Mermaid's rich history, we're not surprised that it holds the title of Britain’s Most Haunted Inn. But it's not just the ghostly spirits people come to experience; the Mermaid Inn has an extensive list of beautiful craft gins, thanks to owner Judith Blincow's love of gin.

The Mermaid's bar holds more than 50 gins, and the bar staff have all had training in gin tasting and mixology, so be prepared to be impressed come cocktail hour! There is also a guest mixologist (that's guest, not ghost) who comes in every Sunday to create beautiful gin-based cocktails.

Why not sip your lovingly prepared G&T in the comfort of the Giant's Fireplace Bar? It’s the very place the infamous Hawkhurst Gang used to conspire, crouched in front of the open log fireplace, complete with a priest hole in the chimney breast that was used when it was a crime to harbour a Roman Catholic.

If you're feeling brave enough (you may want to visit the gin bar first) you can take part in a tour of the Mermaid Inn, where you can walk through the secret passageways, investigate the priest hole and hear of the many ghostly goings-on that have been witnessed by guests and staff alike.

All in all, if spirits are your thing, be it the kind you’ll be served from the amazing gin menu or the kind that walk through bedroom walls, the Mermaid Inn is the place for you. Just don't say we didn’t warn you…

Can you spot the ghosts in one guest’s footage, captured while they slept…
