If you have never tried, or even heard of Sgroppino before, now is the time to give it a go! This classic Italian cocktail recipe is traditionally a delicious and refreshing mix of lemon sorbet, sparkling wine, vodka and limoncello - we’ve taken things to the next level by swapping the vodka for a good measure of gin. It is a must-try!

Sgroppino history:

The Sgroppino is said to have originated in Venice, Italy, in the 16th century from an unknown kitchen servant that was looking for a way to aid the digestion of his wealthy masters, who would gorge themselves on lavish meals. It is, therefore, traditionally a digestif but it has also been used as a palate cleanser between meal courses too.

The earliest versions of a Sgroppino were a simple mix of lemon sorbet and prosecco. They were whipped together before being served. Since then, vodka has found its way into the recipe and so have limoncello and even sambuca from time to time (and now gin!).

Today, it is a cocktail often found at Italian weddings and celebrations. However, you don’t need to wait for a big celebration to enjoy this treat - we love sipping away at it on any hot day when a cold, refreshing cocktail is needed!

Which gin should I use for this Sgroppino recipe?

For this Sgroppino recipe, we recommend using Lantic Morva Gin, Craft Gin Club’s August 2022 Gin of the Month. Lantic Morva Gin has a beautiful mix of floral and berry flavours that come from botanicals foraged from the Cornish countryside.

Those delicious tones are a great compliment to the sweet-tart limoncello, crisp prosecco and delectably icy lemon tones of the sorbet in this recipe. Yum!
