Inspired by Modern Love Gin, Craft Gin Club’s February 2023 Gin of the Month, and its Californian home, we are mixing up a new version of a Mexican-born, now-Cali classic cocktail: the Michelada!

Normally made with Mexican beer, tomato juice and spices, we’ve given this punchy cocktail a twist by adding a good glug of gin and using ginger syrup instead of tomato juice. It’s lively and vibrant and utterly delicious. Give it a go…

If you’ve never tried a Michelada before, think Blood Mary with beer.

This version, created by Craft Gin Club’s master mixologist Dan, pairs the wonderfully bright Californian citrus and subtle berry notes of Modern Love Gin with a punchy ginger syrup, both of which work fantastic will a lighter beer or lager like Corona, Sol or Modello.

Lime juice then adds an extra citrusy kick that’s oh-so-refreshing and tajin chilli salt, which is used to rim the glass, adds a fiery kick that is warm and spiced and delectably moreish.

Ginger Michelada

Ginger Michelada cocktail recipe

50ml Modern Love Gin
25ml fresh lime juice, plus extra to rim the glass
15ml ginger syrup
125ml Mexican lagers or beer, like Corona, Sol or Modello
Tajin, to rim the glass

Begin by rimming your serving glass. Take a beer tankard or highball glass and rub fresh lime juice around the rim, then turn the glass upside down and dip the lip into a shallow saucer of tajin seasoning (tajin is, at its simplest, equal parts chilli flakes and salt).

Now add the gin, lime juice and syrup to a cocktail shaker and shake well with ice. Strain into your glass, add ice and top up with the cold lager. Give it a stir to combine and serve. Enjoy!
