How is Shivering Mountain Gin Early Harvest Edition made?

Shivering Mountain Gin Early Harvest Edition is created by Shivering Mountain Distillery founder Nick Malaczynski and his team. It is inspired by the natural beauty of Mam Tor (meaning “Mother Hill”), a mountain in the Peak District National Park in Derbyshire. Mam Tor is also known as the “Shivering Mountain”.

To make Shivering Mountain Gin, Nick and his team use local botanicals. They wanted to start with a traditional juniper-led London Dry Gin to build the base of the gin, with classic botanicals like coriander and cardamom in combination with angelica root and liquorice.

Over these, he layered the fruity and floral flavours of his childhood. Sloe berries, bilberries, gorse and heather all bring the atmosphere of Derbyshire’s Hope Valley into this gorgeous spirit.

I wanted a gin that was very traditional, but which also was authentic. Something that reflected the Peak District and my background in the valley – the days foraging with my dad when I was a kid, the garden full of sloes, hawthorns and elderflowers. Some of my favourite times were spent walking up in the hills, foraging for bilberries on the moors – so using bilberries as a botanical was non-negotiable.

The range of botanicals in Shivering Mountain Gin Early Harvest Edition can be found here: juniper, coriander, angelica, bilberry leaves, blue mallow, elderflower, orris, gorse flower, orange, Szechuan pepper, cardamom, bilberries, sloes and heather flowers.

The botanicals are then distilled together in a still from Holstein, one of the world’s most renowned brands.

It’s very much a manual process. We make our tails cuts by taste. It seems the right way to do it. You feel more connected to the spirit you’re making when you’re actually there, making those decisions.

— Nick Malaczynski

Once distilled, the gin is then bottled in a glass bottle designed to capture the magic of Mam Tor. The asymmetrical shape of the mountain can be seen at the base of the bottle. The rippling of light through textured glass then makes it seem as though the mountain is shivering.
