Apart from all the other reasons to drink gin - martinis, botanical variety, it's the best spirit for detox - it turns out that it could keep you and your partner happy together (which is amazing news for Valentine’s Day!). That may sound silly, but the drinking habits of couples is actually the subject of a serious study.

drinking

A nine-year research project by the University of Buffalo Research Institute on Addictions found that “Couples that drink together, stay together.” The Institute followed 634 couples of four types:

  1. Neither person was a heavy drinker
  2. Husband only was heavy drinker
  3. Wife only was the heavy drinker
  4. Both were heavy drinkers

Neither person was a heavy drinker

Husband only was heavy drinker

Wife only was the heavy drinker

Both were heavy drinkers

Participating couples had obtained their marriage license soon before the study’s start. “Heavy Drinking” was defined as “drinking six or more drinks at one time or drinking to intoxication.”

Of the couples in which one person only was a heavy drinker, 45-55% were divorced before their ninth anniversary. Of the other two sorts, the divorce rate was about 35%. The conclusion: couples that have similar drinking habits stay together more often than those that don’t.

Now, this isn’t excuse to get blasted on G&Ts with your lover. As you can see, those couples that don’t drink too much also had a low divorce rate. We here at the Craft Gin Club recommend drinking top quality craft spirits with your Valentine. That way, you don’t need to drink too much as you’ll get lost in the flavours they exude - Quality vs. Quantity. But if you were to have a few more than just one gin, we won’t tell. After all, we’re a big fan of Valentine’s staying together - and drinking craft gins together, of course!
