HANKY SPANKY

Given the amount of adult spanking that goes on between Christian Grey and Ana Steele, it’s a surprise their skin isn’t permanently rouged… as rouge as this twist on the classic gin cocktail, the Hanky Panky! The original Hanky Panky Cocktail appeared at the Savoy Hotel’s American Bar in the early 1900s. It’s essentially a version of a Sweet Martini with a couple of dashes of the bitter Italian liqueur, Fernet-Branca. 

If the fact that the original cocktail’s title is a synonym for “naughtiness” isn’t enough to make you wonder why the Hanky Panky didn’t feature in E L James’ trilogy, than the tiny but important modification in the Hanky Spanky recipe brings to mind even more risqué synonyms that feature in the book. Let’s just say the Hanky Spanky adds a bite!

HANKY SPANKY

  • 1 1/2 oz. Warner Edwards Harrington Dry
  • 1 1/2 oz. sweet vermouth
  • 2 dashes Fernet Branca
  • pinch of freshly cut ginger

Pour all ingredients in a cocktail shaker over ice. Stir. Strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with orange peel. Listen to Madonna’s 1990 single from Dick Tracy.
